Local results: general secretary compares his party to the after it was nearly wiped out | The Independent

I’ve heard some odd excuses and analogies in my time but I think this one takes the biscuit.

@mkwadee I never understood why anyone would vote #UKIP - a party based around a single national issue - for local council elections, but they did.

We had Lab/Con/Lib/Green standing locally, but no one seemed to want to actually campaign. The safe-as-houses Labour councillor only pops out once every four years to get re-elected then promptly disappears.

I voted, because I always do, but this was one of the first elections where I thought - why am I bothering when they can't be bothered?

@iona We're trapped in a system where only marginal constituencies matter. If you're in a safe seat, it's pointless since your vote will not have meaning either way. It's similar in local elections.

Isn't it ironic that the proportional representation system is only used in European elections (and NI)?
