I'm searching cars on carmax. I can search by number of cylinders in the engine (which I am surprised anyone searches by), but I cannot find a way to search by "number of asses I can sit in this car at the same time." Number of seats or number of people that can be seated isn't an option I can find!
So Marcus Hutchins, of #WannaCry fame and who had been arrested in the US has pleaded guilty to writing banking #trojan software. Over on the birdsite there's lots of strong opinions. I blogged my opinion that it's a big world out there and trying to dismiss him as a criminal or pardon him because he's a hero are fundamentally misguided. https://blog.paco.to/2019/marcus-hutchins-infosec-soul-searching/
NO ONE SAVES MILK YOU MORON
I collected a bunch of personal memorable moments on a blog post: highest height, coldest temperature, farthest north/south/east/west, etc. Includes some photos. https://blog.paco.to/2019/my-personal-records/
I've been playing some #DnD5e a bit lately. I blogged some thoughts about difference between 5e and prior versions of #DungeonsAndDragons. A lot I don't like, a few things I like. https://blog.paco.to/2019/dungeons-and-dragons-5e-thoughts/
The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.
Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.
Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.
One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies) and on the board of Facebook.
I do not recommend using Brave.
Neither the Boing Boing, nor the BBC article do any justice or any interesting digging into the problem of fake reviews on Amazon. The two best bits I've seen are:
NPR's https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/04/27/606528176/episode-838-a-series-of-mysterious-packages and https://reviewmeta.com/, who actually use science and tech to actually dig into it.
If only the people had pledged millions of euros to restore #NotreDame BEFORE it burned so spectacularly. We all need to wake up. If you cherish any of these things, start working to preserve them now:
• people you love
• rights and freedoms
This is a completely brilliant exploration of the US budget. Someone should do similar for the UK. https://fiscalfs.blogspot.com/p/about-if-youre-us-citizen-you-just-paid.html
People like to shout at protestors (e.g., the #ExtinctionRebellion protestors in #London): "Get a job." I want to shout back: "Get something you believe in enough that you would actually protest." Grow some principles! Care!
One of the things about working at #AWS is the amount of constant learning. I learned 2 new languages today: EBNF and Go. I spent most of the morning learning all the different dialects of EBNF until I found one that was useful to me. Then I found an EBNF test module written in Go and needed to modify it. So I had to learn a bit of Go. Phew. My brain is tired.
Perfect symbol of #Brexit. For several days the BT tower, which can be seen for miles, has displayed an error message. H/t https://twitter.com/thomasdaigle/status/1114878670139809792
