[Endless money losing is] a variant of Gresham’s Law, which says that "bad money drives out good.” If you can counterfeit something for cheap, the counterfeit will eventually take over the entire market and drive out the real commodity. That is what is happening in our economy writ large, a kind of counterfeit capitalism as ‘leaders’ like Neumann are celebrated and actual leaders who can make things and manage are treated like dogshit.

One thing I'm noticing in America is that I'm having trouble finding:
• Beer flavoured beer
• Coffee flavoured coffee
• Jeans that look like jeans
• Cheese flavoured cheese. Well, cheese generally

Welp. Labour has voted to back a Corbyn instead of a Tory Brexit. They've taken off the table. has lost me as a voter for as long as he is at the helm.

I was at an Amazon recruiting event last night and I came up with an interesting bit of advice for talking to Amazonians about your past work: if you can find a way to work a number into a sentence, it's probably to your advantage. "I worked 6 months on a web site supporting 75 internal users who filed an average of 20 support tickets a day" speaks volumes. As opposed to "I supported a busy internal IT support system". Data driven people want to hear data about your work.

I plugged in my 1 that I bought on day 1 in June 2007. It runs iOS 3. The App Store STILL has apps for it. Can you believe that? Go find an Android phone from 2007 and see what love Google is willing to give it.

What RMS, Torvalds and the like cost us

For every gross dude you tolerate, there's almost certainly several people who are pushed out of that space you created for him

The more influential the gross dude, the more people will emulate him and help to push out even more people

And it's mostly women who get pushed out

So for the likes of RMS and Torvalds, the damage they have done to the field of Computer Science may be incalculable

Good riddance

OMFG I just went to buy something using PayPal.
1. They didn't have a credit card on file. Fine. I'll add one. I get an error.
2. They recommend chat with support. Fine. I wait 10 minutes for support drone.
3. Support drone needs to authenticate me. Wants a mobile phone number. The one they have is out of date. He gives me a phone number to call.
4. I use Skype to dial the phone. I copy/paste the CC number to the voice response system. Poof! Works like a charm.

This makes no sense.

If anyone is just starting on / and wants a few million units, I can save you the grind. I’ve got a few hundred fusion igniters worth like 15.8M each. No Man’s bugs.

"Austerity is the idea that the global financial crash of 2008 was caused by there being too many libraries in Wolverhampton."

There is a site on the internet for everything. I discovered I may or may not have made a purchase

Marketing math. Making mac and cheese in 10 minutes:
1. Boil 6 cups of water (takes 0 minutes)
2. Cook pasta 9-11 minutes (takes 9 minutes, even if you boil for 11 minutes)
3. Drain pasta (0 seconds because you multitask)
4. Add butter and stir (30 seconds)
5. Add pasta back to pan and stir (30 seconds)

Amazing how this is in any way “in 10 minutes”

We are truly in a new era of politics if you can ascend to any position of leadership with a name like Dick Braine.

Uncovered a box of artifacts at my folks’ house. Original Dungeons & Dragons books from 1970s and 1980s!

the great thing about getting middle-aged is that you go from "poser who only knows the new album" to "appreciator of obscure deep cuts" with absolutely no effort on your part

I’m at a hotel bar in Dublin. A man orders a pot of tea and a glass of ice. He proceeds to mix them himself at the bar. Guess the man’s accent. 😜

extremely important museum plaque that addresses the language we use to talk about slavery in the american south. @OCRbot

I just realised what a nomad I am. In addition to having every kind of power plug and adapter as standard kit in my backpack, I have a water bottle, full set of cutlery, and chopsticks. I am surprisingly light for having so much stuff.
