Announcing airbreak, a toolkit to jailbreak inexpensive CPAP machines to turn them into emergency #COVID19 ventilators by unlocking all operational modes and allowing custom software extensions.

@th very well done! It scares the shit out of me when you say these things have a cellular connection.

@penguin42 @th Yep, they transmit your usage data so the insurance companies can bill you for the device if you stop using it.

@Gina @penguin42 @th Well, in the US, anyway. I don't know if that "feature" is used in other countries.

@penguin42 @th The cellular connection is mainly for medical personnel. It sends data of the amount of usage, leakage of the mask, and of course apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of sleep apnea severity.

For example my machine is "on a permanent loan" from the hospital. I don't own it. The hospital requires at least 4 h/night of use for that.

On the other hand, it _also_ shares the same data w/ResMed, a US based company. So yeah, a security issue. Am I sharing my apnea data with NSA too, I wonder...

@jabsonik @th It wasn't the outward data that scared me; it was the chance of it getting attacked remotely.
