I t has always puzzled me why they sell 3 seater sofas with only 2 sets of cushions. Surely, I thought, the middle seat would be really uncomfortable?
Today while shopping for furniture, I saw a couple trying out sofas and the penny dropped.
They call them 3 seater sofas, because otherwise they would have to call them "really fat people sofas"

no joke, this is the page out of my NEC PC-9821Xa12's user's manual regarding proper handling of floppies, manga style

Final reports on the 9th August UK power outage; were out a few days ago - not much change from the Interim; a lot more detail on where parts of the grid broke regs in various ways; some more 'embedded' generation failed than expected, and there's some more detail on why the trains locked themselves out.

in other news, DE ICE trains have an API, I now have a fish snippet that formats it for my status bar if it detects that I'm on an ICE train's WiFi~

light shows; I was sent a link to a twitter video of a show, not sure it was buy the intel team or not; but the Intel site looks pretty neat and are doing it on demand.

2020 is off to a good start for me. Spotted this Hyllus diardi jumping spider at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 1 Jan 2020.

It was huge for a jumping spider: see the shot comparing it to my thumb. Most jumping spiders are only a few mm long. This one was about 2-3cm in size.

Marking photos as 'sensitive', although I rather not: it's cute. 🙂

Should be a great 10 years for with any luck; ITER supposed to get plasma in about 5 years; about 5 of the small startups claiming to have something practical within 10 years. I doubt they all will, but heck I hope one of them does.

I wonder if 2020 will be the year when robots will be able to unwrap foil wrapped chocolates (bags of mini-Lindor have got very cheap in the last few days, but heck are they fiddly)

On December 31, 1995, Bill Watterson published the final 'Calvin & Hobbes' comic strip. For most of us, it was like watching our absolute best friend ever move to another continent! The hole in our hearts is still felt even now!

An attractive animated infomercial from NASA for the Artemis back-to-the-moon program:

> While Apollo placed the first steps on the Moon, Artemis will allow humanity to sustainably work and live on another world for the first time. Using the Moon as a proving ground for living on Mars, this will forever establish our presence in the stars. ✨
> We are returning to the Moon – to stay – and this is how we are going!

My update of my Mum's installation to the new LTS went mostly OK; I configured Firefox to display the menu bar, so she can find the things she's used to; showed her where the maximize and close buttons had gone and that was mostly it..except for Gnome's screen lock that confused her; and when I'd explained it, it confused her again when it came up with a slightly different looking screen with the 'updates' on it.

Guess time; how much chaos is 's self-signed cert expiration going to cause on 1st Jan?
