@zeitrechnen Pleroma has better access controls and can be more easily run as a 'closed instance'. It also has far lower requirements on hardware.

They *do* have the Mastodon UI so you can operate the instance as if it's Mastodon w/o others knowing.

in Pleroma you can literally turn federation off entirely.

I don't think that is why #forkoff is a thing.

my understanding is a lot of it has to do with lack of acknowledgement, like people not being acknowledged for their ideas and patches. which is why they complained about patreon and so on, since he is profiting from their work without even acknowledging them.

at least that was my take on it.
