Hmm? So I need an Instagram account if I want Threads, then. #LeSigh
@dick_turpin I've not even looked. Will you be predicting that they will charge for it eventually?
@steevc I can't see why not.
"When you've got them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow."
I think the interesting question is: How many Twitter migrants will flock to Threads? Which, if you think about it, is hysterical that they're leaving one bad platform for another.
@dick_turpin It just seems to be a recurring theme from you. I've had enough of corporate social media as they have all shit on me eventually. There are alternatives, but most don't realise that. It's not like Zuckerberg cares more about his users than Musk.
@steevc I don't think you understand the userbase. The vast majority of the world's population couldn't give a shit about Mastodon or Hive. They want to be on something that Ariana Grande and Piers Morgan are on or, at the very least, their favourite TikTok influencer uses.
Business people understand this, and that's why they'll look for ways to monetize it either directly through subscriptions or indirectly through advertising or data analysis.
I keep saying it; I keep being proved right.
@dick_turpin Oh I understand them all too well mate. They are not all geeks like us. We may not be into 'celebrity culture', but it's massive. I still think that leaves a potential for millions to use decentralised platforms.
Given what Twtr are going through it seems profit is not guaranteed, Remains to be seen how much you can piss off the users.
@steevc But the vast majority don't give a shit about decentralization.
How many Twitter migrants have you seen on the Fediverse (Mastodon) complaining about how they don't like Mastodon? "It's too difficult!", "How do I get verified?", "Why can't I quote Boosts?" they want Twitter, but they don't want to pay for it. Most of them couldn't give a shit about Elon; they just don't want to pay. I think if there is a Twitter killer it could be Threads although I doubt very much Twitter will fold.
@dick_turpin Twtr may be too big to fold, but we may see a shift. I don't think it's just over paying. FB has got shitter as my feed is full of crap now.
I know I'm not typical, but I've got non-techie friends who are using #Hive and liking it.
We've been through MySpace, G+ and others. Kids these days will use different platforms to their parents. Can't assume the top dogs now will be ruling in a few years.
Plus ça change
@dick_turpin I do have an Insta account (I use it solely to find and contact tattoo artists) but stopped myself from signing up for Threads. I think I can live without handing over even more data to Zuckerface.
Besides which, these corporate controlled platforms are all so.... soulless.
